Description

  • Distemper on cloth
the nakthang or black ground thangka depicting the yidam Hevajra with sixteen arms, four legs and six heads standing in ardhaparyankasana within a flaming aureole, with consort Nairatmya, both wearing the six bone ornaments and crowns of skulls demonstrating mastery of the five skandhas, surmounted by lineage holders of the Margapala tradition including Nairatmya at upper center and Virupa at upper center left, surrounded by a retinue of dancing dakinis in the lower register

Provenance

Sotheby's London, 24th April 1990, lot 33.

Condition

The cloth support has an original added section to widen the picture field. There are three horizontal areas of water damage through the left half of the work; in the upper third, middle, and lower third sections, with resulting loss to the pigment. There are also thin vertical striations of water damage running the length of the right hand side of the painting. There are general areas of minor loss throughout the painting. There is also a 1 ½ inch vertical loss to the cloth on the upper left edge of the work. There are original stitching holes around the border of the painting, now visible without the original mount. The border was previously glued around the edges to a cardboard mount. No glue is present on the painted surface or the reverse. There is no evidence of in-painting or restoration to the work.
