Condition

The sheet appears to be sound. There is a faint craquelure pattern across the surface in the areas of gum arabic; otherwise the colours remain bright. Well presented in a gilt wood frame with a cream mount under glass; unexamined out of frame.

Catalogue Note

A member of the New Watercolour Society and the Royal Society of Painters in Oils, Warren’s meticulously detailed paintings, predominantly of heavily wooded landscapes were almost photographic in their intricacy. He was one of the first landscapists to embrace the Pre-Raphaelite mantra of truth to nature and while criticised by Ruskin as “mechanical”, his richly keyed palette and naturalistic depiction of shady groves and dappled light owes more than a small debt to the movement. Highly priced in his lifetime, he developed a distinctive formula of his own, painstakingly building up layers of colour and exploiting to great effect the additional depth and tone created by adding bodycolour and gum Arabic. The result was a jewel-like glow which, unlike the work of many of his contemporaries in watercolour, looks as fresh now as the day it was painted.

The present work relates to Warren's large Rest in the Cool and Shady Wood (Victoria & Albert Museum, London).
