Catalogue Note
George James Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle, whose ancestral seat was the magnificent Castle Howard in Yorkshire, was an aristocrat with a passion for art. In 1865 he enrolled at the Royal College of Art and there met Dante Gabriel Rossetti who introduced him to his circle of friends, such as William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. Further acquaintances included such Victorian luminaries as John Ruskin, Charles Kingsley and Frederic Leighton, and the influences of these relationships fed into his work. With financial security, the Earl had the luxury of not having to sell his paintings for a living and was able to travel extensively, venturing to Italy, India, Egypt and South Africa in search of new subjects. Closer to home, the present work focuses on the stretch of Northumbrian countryside surrounding Bamburgh Castle.
The Earl was also a tireless promoter and supporter of the arts. As well as being a patron to the Pre-Raphaelite circle, from 1881 until his death, he sat on the board of Trustees of the National Gallery, eventually becoming Chairman. He was involved in the foundation of the Tate Gallery, which opened in 1897, and was a member of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.
