Catalogue Note

Boyce probably knew the Irish-born artist William Davis (1812–1873) through their mutual friendship with Dante Gabriel Rossetti or their membership of the Hogarth Club. He was one of the remarkable group of painters based in Liverpool, who absorbed Pre-Raphaelite principles into their work. This engaging and intimate drawing was probably made during a moment of repose whilst Davis and Boyce were on a sketching trip together.
