Condition
The watercolour has been well preserved and carefully presented. The colours are largely very strong and bold. Catalogue Note
In this colourful watercolour Turner depicts a section of Addison’s Walk, within the grounds of Magdelen College. The path had existed since the 16th century, and was so-named after Joseph Addison (1672-1719), a Fellow of the College from 1698 until 1711. In 1801 the walk might have been destroyed, but for the College’s rejection of Humphrey Repton’s (1752-1818) plans to flood the surrounding meadows in order to create a lake.
