Catalogue Note

This fresh and lively study has been tentatively dated to 1848, a year in which the artist holidayed with his family at Guildford and conducted many local sketching tours. Stylistically it can be compared to Richmond's Mickleham Downs, a landscape which includes the same cedar tree. That work is dated 1848 and inscribed 'sketched in company with my dear friend Samuel Palmer.'
