Catalogue Note
In this watercolour the artist looks north onto a summer landscape composed of strong greens, yellows and blues. Shaded under mature trees, a herd of fallow deer rest in the mid-day heat, while beyond, hounds chase a fox with the huntsman in full cry behind. This view had intrigued other artists too, there is, for example, a similar landscape by John Robert Cozens in the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery in Bedford (see. E. Joll, Cecil Higgins Art Gallery Watercolours and Drawings, Yale, 2002, p. 81).
This work has previously been fully attributed to George Barret, Junior (1767-1842). When Christie’s sold it in July 1994 it was accompanied by an old inscription that read: ‘Windsor Castle, from the Great Park. / To Jas Underwood Esq. / from the Artist. G. Barret Jun 1833.’ This has sadly been lost and the attribution now seems unlikely, on both stylistic grounds and because Barret is not known to have signed in this manner. The quality of the watercolour is however very high and the artist was clearly well trained.
