Catalogue Note

Although Louis Francia was French, he moved to England as a boy and grew up in London. He began to exhibit watercolours at the Royal Academy in 1795 and in 1799 joined Thomas Girtin’s Sketching Society. In 1816 he returned to his native France, where he met and then tutored the young painter Richard Parkes Bonington.
