Catalogue Note

John Linnell visited Samuel Palmer’s house at Shoreham in Kent several times in 1828. That year marked a watershed in the relationship between the two artists. Linnell, who had previously been an advisory figure to the younger man, grew to share Palmer’s love of the ‘visionary’ landscapes that could be found in that part of south-east England.
