Catalogue Note
John Constable’s reputation as one of the greatest landscape painters of the 19th Century continues to this day. In part, he achieved this success through his constant examination of the natural world. Although detailed studies from nature rarely appear on the open-market, similar drawings to the present sheet can be found in public collections. For example, in his Suffolk and Essex Sketchbook, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, Constable used page nine to produce a detailed study of rhubarb leaves. (see G. Reynolds, The Early Paintings and Drawings of John Constable, Yale, 1996, p. 194, no. 14.32) (V & A 1259-1888). We are grateful to Peter Bower for his help in cataloguing this lot.
