the front face carved with a dignitary seated in an elaborate pavilion, surrounded by ladies, attendants and boys in a fenced garden, framed by shaped cartouches variously enclosing birds and flowers, landscapes or boy on buffalo, all above leafy floral sprays, the reverse with scholars accompanied by attendants and engaged in various literati pursuits in a mountainous landscape, framed by mythical beasts and precious objects

Condition

There are general minor losses and cracks to the whole lacquer surface, with associated overpainting which is particularly evident along the hinged sides. Viewing from the side with a dignitary within a pavilion and counting from the left: the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th and 7th panels have a crack running vertically from the top to the mid-section. The 3rd panel also has areas of loss around the face of the figure playing a flute, and another figure behind the window. The middle left edge of the 5th panel has an uneven area of flaking to the lacquer. The 11th panel has a similar area of loss and uneven flaking to the lacquer to the upper left edge. There is a diagonal crack around the mid-section of the 12th panel. Viewing from the scholar's side and counting from the left: the 1st panel has repainting to the right edge near the rocks and along the hinges, the 3rd panel has a vertical crack running from the top to the mid-section with associated overpainting, the 4th panel with an area of unstable lacquer flaking unevenly to the rocks near the middle left edge. There are considerable losses to the right edge of the same panel, particularly evident on the faces of the figures and the mountains. The 6th and the 7th panels have vertical cracks running from the top to the bottom. There is considerable cracking to the lacquer on the mythical beasts on the mid lower bottom of the 12th panel.
