Description
- cinnabar and lacquer
each with an ovoid body divided into four lobes, rising from a stepped spreading foot to a waisted neck and everted rim, the shoulders set with a pair of gilt-bronze animal mask handles suspending loose rings, intricately carved in varied levels of relief revealing the multiple layers of red, yellow and green lacquer, each face with panelled designs variously enclosing scholars and attendants in a mountainous landscape with trees and misty clouds, reserved on a ground of interlocking foliate strapwork, all between a ruyi head band and leafy lotus sprays, the neck similarly decorated with stylised lotus sprays, encircled at the rim and the foot with a keyfret border, the interior lacquered red and the base in black

Condition
The one vase has a 20cm., horizontal hairline age crack running through the middle of the front panel, light overpainting to two sections of the rim (each approximately 7cm., wide) and repair and overpainting to cracks on the side and top edge of the foot; the other vase has a similar area of over-painting to the rim and repair and overpainting to cracks at the edge of the foot. Both vases originally drilled through the base for conversion into a lamp, now restored.
