Description

modelled in mirror image, each depicted recumbent with its bushy tail curled alongside its rear haunches, the head turned back, detailed with bulging eyes and a semi-opened mouth revealing sharp fangs

Condition

One beast has an area of loss to the chin (2x1.2cm) and two chips to one side of the horns (approx. 0.6x0.6cm each) which has now been filled with wax. There are similar areas of infill (largest 1.8x0.3cm) on the back. The other beast has similar wax infill (to a lesser extent) to the back of the horns, the spine and the tail. Both beasts with extensive overpainting to the face, particularly to the eyes and teeth. There are other areas of enamel and gilding loss, some with associated overpaint. Small chips along the extremities, such as the claws. Minor glaze firing imperfections including burst glaze bubbles, fritting and iron spots.
