Catalogue Note

As the proposer of a voyage towards the North Pole, the first voyage with express instructions to reach the Pole if possible, Barrington read this report at a meeting of the Royal Society on May 19, 1774. The expedition, "not withstanding their repeated efforts", penetrated to 80½o, some way short of reports recorded in this paper of seafarers reaching 84o.
