Catalogue Note

In 1875 the career of "Baker Pasha", a younger brother of Sir Samuel Baker, in the British army came to an inglorious ending after being arrested on a charge of indecent assault upon a young woman in a railway carriage. Later on he entered the service of Turkey in the war with Russia and obtained the command of a new Egyptian gendarmerie and police force. “In his detailed account ... he provided an evaluation of Russian advances towards India, criticized British foreign policy, urged military preparedness and a ‘bolder policy’ against Russia in Asia, and proposed a nine-point plan of action” (ODNB).
