Catalogue Note

PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. “The grandly named British Imperial Antarctic Expedition of 1920–21 is one of Antarctica’s ironies; four principals embarked for the poorly equipped journey, but Bagshawe and his enemy Lester were left on their own in the Antarctic during a hazardous winter. Bagshawe being a geologist of sorts and a man to finish what he starts, this account holds its own in the annals of polar exploits” (Taurus Collection). Bagshawe further distinguished himself with the publication of the children's book Pompey was a Penguin in 1942.
