Catalogue Note

The artist's prolonged travels totalled in his estimation more than 39,000 miles, nearly a third of which was covered on horseback. Starting from St Petersburg early in 1848, he visited populated parts of Siberia and explored the Altai Mountains, where he had close brushes with death. This work provides a vivid account of his misadventures and the physical features of the regions rarely visited by Westerners.
