Catalogue Note

"After the First Anglo-Sikh War the territory between the Sutlej and Beas rivers was annexed and placed under John Lawrence, who appointed Cunningham to occupy the hill tracts of Kangra and Kulu. As reward for his success in this he was chosen to demarcate the frontier between the Kashmir province of Ladakh and Tibet. At first he had to return, but ultimately he accomplished the task with Sir Richard Strachey. He also settled the boundary between the states of Bikaner and Bahawalpur" (ODNB).
