Catalogue Note
An extremely rare work: there are only two auction records on AE or ABPC within the last seventy years.
Pickersgill had sailed with Captain Cook on his first and second voyage. The navy picked him to lead two expeditions to Baffin Bay, one in 1776 and another the following year, to search for the North-West passage, and hopefully to link up with Cook. At that time Cook was on his third voyage and working his way east along the Arctic coast from the Pacific. The aim was to guide Cook into Baffin Bay and back to England but both expeditions failed to penetrate the icefield at Davis Strait.
The account was published anonymously in 1782 but is generally attributed to Pickersgill.
