The first full-scale biography of Captain Cook and an important record of Cook's voyages and life comprising an eye-witness account of his death by the surgeon David Samwell. It "was intended to give a well-balanced account of his life from birth to death, including his family and early years... The Newfoundland and Labrador surveys are discussed, and the three voyages are dealt with in great depth" (Hill).
