Condition

The condition is stable with dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. The font was designed to be outdoors, there is consequently weathering to the surface throughout. There are losses to the upper outer rim, and to the edges of the base. There are smaller chips elsewhere, including to some of the decorative elements. There are two holes in the upper rim and three drilled inlets (all presumably for a lid or grill). There is another small drilled hole in the side. There is a large drilled hole inside the basin to expel water.

Catalogue Note

The present vessel is reminiscent of the decorated stone and marble well heads, which were ubiquitous in Venice in the 15th and 16th centuries. The iconic representation of Saint Mark in the form of a lion substantiates the location the present object to Venice or the Veneto.
