Condition

Overall the condition of the casket is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. A few small dividing panels are lost, including one on the front of the lid on the far left, one on the back of the lid above the violinist angel and one on the left side of the body of the casket to the left of St. Peter. There are a few small losses to some of the panels, particularly to the dividing panels on top of the lid. There is wear to the probably original polychromy and gilding. The underside panel may be a replacement. It is possible that some of the panels (more likely dividing panels) could also have been replaced; though there is no clear evidence for this. Some panels are composed in sections. There is minor stable splitting to the bone consistent with material. There is a small filled hole to the upper panel on the right side of the lid. The lock is lost.

Catalogue Note

There is a very similar Flemish 15th-century bone casket in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no. OA 124). Note the near-identical foliate dividing panels, and the old men with billowing scrolls in the upper side panels.
