Catalogue Note

The present type of Virgin and Child derives from the smiling curvilinear Gothic Madonnas carved in Paris and environs. The rounded face and more voluminous drapery of this well-proportioned statue characterise the figures from the region of Lorraine. In her survey of Lorraine stone sculpture of the 14th century, Schmoll illustrates several comparable Madonnas but particularly one in a niche on the south side of the Triforium in the choir of Langres Cathedral.
