Condition
Overall the condition of the figure is good with wear and dirt to the surface consistent with age. The figure would benefit from a professional clean. There is flaking to the painted surface, particularly at the edges of the drapery, more severely at the base, leading to a few larger losses including in a drapery fold under the proper left arm. There is some minor stable hairline splitting to the surface, particularly on the reverse. The thumb of the proper right hand and a section of the proper right sleeve were reattached. The head was carved separately and in section; the joints are slightly visible. The hands were made separately and can be detached. There is some minor tarnishing to the staff and halo. There are some areas of dryness to the reverse of the halo.

Catalogue Note
Portuguese sculpture developed rapidly with the foundation of the Mafra School of Sculpture during the reign of King Joseph I (1714-1777). It introduced the Italian late Baroque style to Portuguese art. The present sculpture exhibits some wonderful carving in the hair and beard. Compare with works by José de Almeida (1709-1769), one of the most prominent sculptors of the Mafra School.
