Condition

Overall in good original condition with the usual wear to the patina in places especially to the top of head, arms and legs consistent with handling and touching. Light scratches consistent with age. Minute chips to marble edges, and scratches around the neck consistent with the sculpture revolving above it. A beaded bronze ring lacking to the middle section of the marble base. Please note that the bronze is 29 1/2 inches high and the marble base is 10 inches high.

Catalogue Note

Seraphin Denécheau studied under Rude and Jean-Pierre David (David D'Angers). He exhibited on a regular basis at the Salon from 1859, and his Femme carréssant une chimère was noted at the Paris 1867 Exposition Universelle. An artist of portraits, mythological and allegorical groups, he had numerous commissions from the French State, the Musée du Louvre, the Opéra de Paris, the Gare du Nord, and a number of Parisian churches.
