Catalogue Note
Eugène Marioton was a pupil of Augustin Alexandre Dumont. He had a long and successful career as a sculptor and medal engraver, exhibiting regularly at the Salon from 1882 until 1922. As with Le Fascinator or Charmeur de serpents, th epresent model is one of his best-known works. The composition is taut and sinuous as the charmer controls the panther dangerously crouching at his feet. The subject fits within the contemporary fascination with Oriental themes.
