Condition
Overall in good condition and presentation. Some firing hairline cracks visible as well as some patches of overpaint in few places. Some repaired breaks around top of tree stump.

Catalogue Note
Jean-Baptiste Pigalle began his training with Robert Le Lorrain and Jean-Baptiste II Lemoyne before studying at the Académie de France in Rome between 1736 and around 1739, ultimately returning to Paris in 1742. Along with Augustin Pajou and Étienne-Maurice Falconet, he was one of the most celebrated 18th century French sculptors.
The original group by Pigalle, now in the permanent collection of the Museé du Louvre (RF 297), was commissioned in 1754 by La Marquise de Pompadour for the Château de Bellevue.
