Catalogue Note
The title-page of Pictures from Italy announces, as promised in this letter, that the book contains "Vignette Illustrations on Wood, by Samuel Palmer". Palmer - the friend and follower of Blake - had spent the years 1837-39 in Italy following his marriage, and had subsequently exhibited his Italian pictures at the Royal Academy. Palmer was teaching drawing and watercolour to supplement his meagre income from painting, so this commission was no doubt extremely welcome.
