Mike Margolis is a graduate of Willesden, Central and the Royal Art Colleges, he studied lithography under Clifford Wilkinson, and then became a protégé of the woodcut artist Paul Peter Piech. He has won over seventeen hundred international awards for graphics and fine arts, including two gold medals in the American Communication Arts Exhibitions and nine Layton Awards. He is married to Anita Harris, the actress and singer who gained international acclaim for her portrayal of Grizabella in Cats. It was during the run of the Lloyd-Webber musical that Mike was inspired by the performances of the cast to create Catgrafika. Thanks to the patronage of Cameron Mackintosh and Andrew Lloyd-Webber, the collection was originally exhibited in the foyer of the New London Theatre, complementing the performances of the musical.

The artist notes that this piece was inspired by the performances of Stephen Wayne and Wayne Fowkes in their portrayals of Macavity, the mystery cat. The label provides a date of 1986.
