Description

  • Carroll, Lewis [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson]
  • ‘To a Young Lady…’, autograph manuscript copy of an unrecorded and unpublished poem
  • PAPER
Eight lines in two stanzas (41 words) together with lengthy title in Dodgson’s violet ink, 1 page, oblong 8vo, dated by the author 18 February 1884 together with Dodgson’s reference number ‘46309’ and ‘[Copy]’ at head of sheet, two folds

A newly discovered poem fully entitled 'To a Young Lady, of whom I was in doubt whether she expected to be called “Miss So-and-so” or “So-and-so” without the “Miss.”', demonstrating the author’s use of humorous wordplay and alliteration. The poem asks the recipient, (Miss Elizabeth Hussey) not to miscall the author "…a much misled | Mistaken misanthrope!" and asks "If I should merely miss the “Miss”, | Would you, Miss, miss it much?"

Unrecorded writings by Dodgson are important discoveries, and this poem shows Dodgson at his inventive best with language.

Provenance

Elizabeth Ley Hussey (see note to previous lot)
