Athawes is described in the letter by Edmund Burke copied in this manuscript as having been "the first Person in the American Trade". Athawes was a tobacco merchant with radical sympathies who corresponded with George Washington and acted as agent to the 5th Lord Fairfax, a major landowner in Virginia.
