on a single leaf headed "Winston Club. Distinguished Visitor's Book", Berlin, dated 21 July 1945, mounted on green board, sunned where previously framed
A document signed in Berlin just weeks after the surrender of Nazi Germany, at the time of the Potsdam conference. Churchill opened the "Winston Club" on Kurfurstendamm for British servicemen in Berlin on 21 July 1945, the day of the British victory parade through the city. Churchill was in Berlin for the final great wartime conference, the Potsdam Conference, where the "big three" agreed on the postwar administration of Germany and issued terms for the surrender of Japan. The results of the British election were announced on 26 July, just five days after this document was signed and whilst the conference was still in session, after which Churchill's place at the negotiating table was taken by Clement Atlee.
