Catalogue Note
Each volume has the bookplate of Arthur G. Soames (1886-1962), father of Sir Christopher Soames.
"In 1899 Lady Randolph founded and edited the Anglo-Saxon Review; in spite of its contributors and its handsome binding, this monthly magazine was overpriced at a guinea, had no theme, and failed after ten issues" (ODNB). The project was not short of ambition; Lady Churchill was advised by her son Winston, who suggested it should “preserve a permanent record of the thoughts and aspirations of our times, which vary as swiftly as light changes on running water, for wiser ages yet unborn.” Contributors to these volumes include Gosse, Shaw, Beerbohm, and Churchill himself.
