Catalogue Note

Monkeyscape provides a different vantage point of viewing the Yakasugi Forest macaques in play. With a keen eye for design, Chen Qikuan creates an aesthetic pattern from a landscape only visible when near. The sponge-like brush patterns of the trees are interspersed among organic blue patches of sky and branches. Up close, monkeys and deer appear to float in-between, thus creating miniature scenes throughout the painting.
