Condition
This work is in good condition overall. There is evidence of light wear and handling along the edges. There are scattered footprints trough out the work, which are intentional but have caused some minor instability on the paint layer, resulting in a few localized spots of paint loss. There is some unstable craquelure with associated paint loss, predominantly located in the left center of the canvas. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, there is no evidence of restoration. Unframed.

Catalogue Note
Der Junge Ritter is an outstanding example of Georg Baselitz’s monumental painterly expression. Executed in 1991-1992, this powerful work sees the artist moving away from a figurative approach, to a more abstract, evocative construction. The title, which translates to The Young Knight, suggests both ancient history and promise for the future. The active composition, which combines bold pools of color within a grid of roughly hewn black lines, seems to reference Medieval heraldic imagery, while simultaneously evoking post-war European abstraction. The eagle that occupies the lower portion of the canvas is a powerful cultural signifier that Baselitz has employed since the early 1980s to add expressive and emotional urgency to his exploration of paint. These motifs, combined with Baselitz’s use of impressive scale, lend an undeniable energy to this forceful composition.
