Catalogue Note
The distinctive 'box' form of this lot is typical of winged armchairs made in the Lancashire and Yorkshire Dales. They are colloquially known as 'lambing' chairs, apparently because they were used by shepherds to oversee their flocks. (see Bernard D. Cotton, The English Regional Chair, Antique Collectors' Club, 2001, p. 434–437).
