Condition

The painting is overall in a good state of preservation. It has an old relining which has been properly done during the first half of the 20th century. Under a dirty, dull varnish. Under UV lamp: Under a green uniform varnish. No visible restoration.

Catalogue Note

Selon une annotation à l’arrière du tableau, ce charmant Portrait d’un prince de la maison de France costumé en pèlerin était attribué à Carle Van Loo. D’après cette note, le portrait représenterait le roi Louis XV, jeune, en pèlerin. Il existe en effet un tableau de Louis XV en enfant portant le costume de Saint Jacques provenant de l’Ancienne collection Edouard Kann, peint par le célèbre Nicolas Lancret, dont le modèle est très proche de celui de notre tableau.
