Condition
Very good condition overall with some minor wear to the patina consistent with age and handling. Very good and crisp cast, signed by the medallist Bertinet.

Catalogue Note
A son arrivée en France, Francesco Bertinetti rentre au service de Nicolas Fouquet et prend le nom de François Bertinet. Le surintendant, convaincu des talents diplomatiques de son jeune protégé en fait aussitôt son premier secrétaire. En 1661, dans sa disgrâce Fouquet entraine la chute de Bertinet qui restera enfermé huit années à la Conciergerie du Palais. Pour occuper ses longues journées carcérales, Bertinet modèle de petits portraits en médaillons, le plus souvent en cire. La légende dit que Louis XIV, séduit par une effigie que Bertinet lui fit porter, non contenant de la gracier, lui accorda même une pension. Un médaillon similaire est conservé à la Wallace Collection (inv. no S 380), un autre, légèrement plus petit, au cabinet des Médailles de la Bibliothèque Nationale de France (inv. no 3179).
