Condition
-At the end of the scroll, there appears to be areas of paper loss, and restoration on certain characters in the scroll. Otherwise, generally in good condition.

上款：「秋草」即著名畫家陳秋草（1906-1988），浙江鄞縣人。早年肄業於上海美術專科學校，致力中國傳統繪畫的研究及創作，曾主編出版多種美術刊物，並多次舉辦個人畫展。歷任美協上海分會秘書長、上海美術館名譽館長。
註：民國「海派」諸家中，錢叔厓工書擅畫，尤以篆刻名世，與吳昌碩、王大炘並稱「江南三鐵」。他早歲為裝裱學徒，嘗請益於吳缶老之門，藝事大進。復得鄭文焯及橋本關雪推廣宣揚其藝，聲名日噪。一九三五年，舉家遷日，卻在「盧溝橋事變」爆發後，因冒險護送郭沫若回國，被日方逮捕，判囚四年。
本卷寫於一九三七年，即錢氏寓居東瀛之時。全卷以其自刻印章為範例，從三代、秦漢、六朝，篆隸草行楷，遂一細述各朝之書體，其背後淵源，及時人評價。錢氏文字著作流傳甚稀，本卷可視為其研究心得；且篆刻書法，一爐共冶，學術與藝術價值並重。
按畫家家屬編著之〈錢瘦鐵年譜〉，同年春仲，叔厓另作印譜，形式、內容與本卷相若，選鈐印章略異，個別文字見添刪，或為本卷之初稿。
又按〈年譜〉所述，一九三六年，錢氏供職日本書法刊物〈書苑〉，編寫〈中華民國的習字法〉，從甲骨、石刻以至法帖中選字入印，刻成印章一組，逐次介紹。本卷之內容及構思，或可溯源於此。
從卷首署「丁丑新春」、卷中一段署「橅於淞濱芋香宧」及卷尾署「僑寓扶桑（道）灌山中亦將三載」，可知此作非完成於一時。即使一度返國，居停滬上，仍未有擱筆，全卷前後歷數月始成。寫畢同年，即被牽連入獄，直至四一年獲釋，作品仍妥善保存。一九四五年，錢氏在北京舉行畫展，或於此時檢舊作重題，送贈藝友。
