A Set of Three Black Lacquer 'Ear Cups' Western Han Dynasty
Estimate
50,000 - 70,000 HKD
bidding is closed
Description
each of elliptical form, delicately constructed with deep rounded sides supported on a slightly raised oval base, set with a pair of rounded 'ear'-shaped handles, the interior lacquered in pale brown and finely incised with a different mythical animal, two felines and a deer, each with spotted fur and a feathery tail striding among 'C' scrolls within a plain oval border divided by thin hatched lines and further repeated on the edges of the handles
Condition
The three cups have been re-lacquered and covered in a thin varnish. The incised decoration on the interiors of the cups appear to be original. The transparent varnish has bubbled and wrinkled possibly due to the surface coming in contact with plastic bubble wrap. The brown lacquer surface of the cup with the chimera seems to have less re-lacquering on the interior. All the cups most likely have had cracks stabilized and covered under the lacquer, but it is difficult to discern where they are.
