Description
of upright rectangular section, the cover inlaid in mother-of-pearl, soapstone and lacquer on a black lacquer ground with a parrot perched on a prunus branch, above flowering hibiscus and bamboo with their corresponding leaves coloured in two tones of green, the sides similarly decorated with beribboned babao ('Eight Treasures') including the double lozenges, umbrella, double horns, pearl, stone chime or scroll, the interior lacquered in red
Condition
The black lacquer ground is extensively cracked and sections of inlay have been replaced on the cover and sides, including the butterfly on the upper left of the box and possibly the parrot. The red-lacquered interior is crackled and has been stabilised with touches of re-lacquering on the underside of the cover. There is an old Western inventory label '143' on the underside of the box.
