Catalogue Note
This drawing is probably linked to Moore's life-sized painting of a solitary female figure, Sapphires (Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery) exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1877. The pose is similar and both pictures have a background of heavy drapery. However, it is likely that this pastel was conceived as an independent work of art. The colour scheme is typically harmonious and the composition is sophisticated, combining oriental and classical elements.
