Catalogue Note

This drawing was made in preparation for one of Leighton's largest and most impressive paintings, The Daphnephoria (Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight) painted between 1874 and 1876. The painting was described by Holman Hunt as 'the finest and most beautiful picture in the world.' It depicts the festivities held every nine years in honour of the God Apollo and his love for the nymph Daphne. This drawing was owned by Mrs James Watney who also owned several important paintings by Leighton, including The Fisherman and the Syren (Bristol Art Gallery), Electra at the Tomb of Agamemnon (Ferens Art Gallery, Hull), Idyll (private collection) and the most famous of all Leighton's paintings Flaming June (Museo de Arte Ponce, Puerto Rico).
