Condition

The canvas has been lined. Some areas of craquelure to her robes and to her cheek and neck. Some light surface dirt otherwise generally sound. Ultraviolet light reveals an opaque varnish. There are some fine infillings to her robes, her hand, her cheek and some small areas of retouching in the background. Two lines of horizontal retouching to the lower quadrant which appear to have been made to previous stretcher bar cracking. Held in a gilt plaster Watts-style frame.

Catalogue Note

Dicksee specialised in painting Shakespeare's heroines and it is likely that the present picture depicts either Imogen from Cymbeline or Calphurnia from Julius Caesar.
