Condition

There are some areas of craquelure in the sky otherwise the work appears in good overall condition. The varnish is a little dirty and may benefit from a light clean. Ultraviolet light reveals flecked areas of retouching in the sky and some very small flecks to the cliff and in the foreground, which have been well executed. Held in probably its original gilt composite frame.

Catalogue Note

The present work was intended to form a pair with Cooper's North (sold Sotheby's, 29 September 1994, lot 565) depicting a scene near the Scottish borders. In South, Cooper has replaced the rugged mountainside with the chalk cliff face, which was described in a contemporary review as '...the favourite picture of the two, and the artist has given novelty to this by elborating the effects of light and sunshine upon a high chalk hill....in magnificent masses of colour. The green pasture in the foreground, with some of Mr Cooper's own cows, make it altogether a highly attractive picture' (Kentish Gazette, 4 April 1865).
