Catalogue Note
This drawing was made c.1865 and relates to two red chalk drawings (Birmingham City Art Gallery) which have been identified as early studies for the central figure in Burne-Jones' allegorical painting The Hours (Sheffield City Art Gallery) painted between 1870 and 1883. The coloured chalk was probably added by Burne-Jones at a later date to develop the drawing into an independent picture.
