Catalogue Note

Figures and foliage feature in a number of Swift's works from the early 1950s, with a distinct and compelling atmosphere. They received critical acclaim at his first exhibitions through Victor Waddington, and signalled the emergence of a new, genuine talent on the Irish contemporary scene. The muted colours, dry paint surface and angular outlines show his close working relationship with Lucian Freud, who shared a flat with Swift on his visits to Ireland in the early 50s.
