Catalogue Note
The present work likely stems from the latter part of Swift's career, which was cut short by an inoperable brain tumor in 1983. After periods in Dublin and Ireland, Swift moved to the Algarve in Portugal in the early 1960s, captivated by the country which he described in a letter to a friend as, 'west of Ireland with wine, olives and sunshine'. He had a large studio built there in 1968, where his work took a rich and expressive direction, seen here in the heavily impastoed paint surface, in comparison to the sombre tones of his early work (see lot 119).
