Catalogue Note

Dorothea Sharp lived for much of her life in Berkshire but made regular painting trips to south Cornwall to paint children playing at the seaside. She particularly liked to paint on the beach at Sennen, a popular seaside destination for families. The bright midday sunlight of the present picture captures the heat of the summer whilst the actions of the children making sand-castles and looking after their younger siblings, is wholly natural. The period charm of Sharp's work is captured by the 1930s hairstyles and clothing of the children.
