Catalogue Note

A rare wartime letter from the Brigadier General who forced the British evacuation from Boston.

John Thomas (1727-1776) was at this time Brigadier General of the 2nd Massachusetts Regiment leading his troops in the siege of Boston limiting British land access to that town. The present letter, written from the right wing of the developing Boston siege, just ten days after the battles of Lexington and Concord, introduces Captain Richmond of Dartmouth to the Committee of Safety:

"Capt. Richmond of Dartmouth is just come into my camp & tells me they have a number of Minute Men now in Redyness & much do want [satisfaction?]. I have directed him to the Honerable [sic] Committee of Safety for their Direction. I am not acquainted with Mr. Richmond your Honor will be able to judge of the matter when you have heard him."
